After Apple customers in the United States, their European counterparts are finally gaining the opportunity to repair their M chip iPhones and Macs at home. Apple has just confirmed the launch of its Self Repair Service in Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, Poland and France.

Apple’s repair program makes it possible to obtain original spare parts to carry out the most common repairs on iPhones of generations 12 and 13, or even on a Mac with an M1 or M2 chip. In all, 200 parts will be made available, accompanied by specific tools and documentation so that the repair goes as smoothly as possible. Among the possible repairs at home, we find the replacement of the battery, the camera, the screen, the SIM card holder or even the Taptic Engine and the speaker. A catalog certainly not exhaustive, but which includes the most common and easy repairs for those who are ready to get their hands dirty.

For those who do not want to spend money on tools that will only be used once, Apple has thought of everything. A kit is available for hire for €60. The loan lasts one week and shipping is free. For each component change in your device, you can return the used part to Apple to benefit from a credit and thus lower the price of the new part. Which can be interesting, when you know that some can easily exceed 200 €, which is the case when changing the photo module, for example.

We bet that even with the original parts and the tools of Apple, the repair at home will not be easy. iPhones are not the smartphones with the highest repairability index, with the iPhone 13 earning a score of 6.4/10, with a score of 5.8/10 attributed to its ease of disassembly. It will therefore be necessary to arm yourself with patience and have confidence in your talents to dismantle your product without batting an eyelid. Apple of course provides an installation manual for each spare part on its site.

Finally, it should be noted that the Apple project is part of a more global trend aimed at encouraging the repair of electronic products. The Cupertino company should also be joined by the competition, in particular Samsung, which is also considering facilitating the home repair of its devices.
