Attention “Top Gun” fans: According to US media reports, a third part with Tom Cruise as flying ace Maverick is already in development.
Tom Cruise (61) became a high-flyer in 2022 with the sequel to the 1986 “Top Gun” cult film and broke box office records with “Top Gun: Maverick”. Fans had great and justifiable hopes that the actor would return to the big screen for a third time as pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Like Matthew Belloni in the online magazine “Puck News” and “The Hollywood Reporter” reports“Top Gun 3” is said to have been in development since late fall.
Will these stars of the sequel also return?
Accordingly, “Top Gun: Maverick” co-author Ehren Kruger (51) should write the script for the third part. According to the Hollywood Reporter, sources report that director Joe Kosinski (49) would also return as director. In addition, Miles Teller (36) and Glen Powell (35), who played Top Gun graduates Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and Jake “Hangman” Seresin in the sequel, are also said to be back. Paramount has not yet commented on the plans.
It was recently announced that Tom Cruise has signed a contract with Warner Bros. Discovery and he will work with Warner as a star and producer. Cruise had the message at X confirmed and declared: “I’m looking forward to making great films together!” However, the deal should not be exclusive, so nothing should stand in the way of further collaboration with Paramount for “Top Gun”.
However, the wait for a new Top Gun movie could be considerable. Cruise is currently busy with the eighth “Mission: Impossible” film, the release of which has been postponed to May 23, 2025 due to the Hollywood strike. The film was originally scheduled to be released in theaters on June 28, 2024. In addition, it took years until the first “Top Gun” sequel made it into theaters and Maverick was able to celebrate his brilliant comeback.
