  • The US Open is over for Stan Wawrinka (ATP 295) after the 1st round. After only two sets played, the Vaud native had to give up against Corentin Moutet (FRA/ATP 112).
  • At this point, the 37-year-old was 4: 6, 6: 7 (7: 9) behind.
  • After losing the starting set, Wawrinka was able to improve, but also had to be treated by a physiotherapist.

The US Open ended abruptly for Stan Wawrinka. In the tie-break of the second set, the Swiss missed two set points before having to give up the match a few minutes later after losing the round. The task of the Romand came as a surprise, but he had already called the physiotherapist twice before. First a finger had to be taped, then the thigh had to be treated.

Even the start of the game had not started as desired for Wawrinka. He was quickly behind the French lucky loser Corentin Moutet with two breaks and 2:5 behind. The Swiss was able to get back a break, but in the end the round went to Moutet 6:4.

Next hour defeat

Wawrinka was able to improve in the second set. He was the more active player for a long time, but couldn’t create a single break chance. He himself fended off five opportunities for a service breakthrough from Moutet. This led to a tie-break, in which both Moutet and Wawrinka made many mistakes. The Frenchman had the upper hand thanks to another mistake by Wawrinka.

For the 37-year-old Swiss, it is the fifth first-round defeat in a row. He had already lost to Moutet in the first round at the French Open.
