Age, sex, profession: discover the profile of the new deputies to the National Assembly

INFOGRAPHICS – 577 deputies, elected this Sunday in the legislative elections, must represent the French in the Assembly. X-ray of these women and politicians.

They were 6290 candidates at the start, 1148 to pass the second stage, and 577 finally to be elected. According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior: 245 deputies belong to the coalition of the presidential majority, 131 to Nupes, 89 to the National Rally, 64 to the Republicans and UDI, and finally 48 for the rest. But beyond the results by political group, what is the face of the new assembly?

Age: two “2000” in the Assembly, a broken record

With less than 5% of the votes cast, neither the oldest nor the youngest of the candidates will have passed the first round. At 18, the Republican candidate, Raphaëlle Rosa, was able to focus on her baccalaureate, which she was reviewing at the same time as the campaign.

The youngest of the deputies are actually 21 years old, a record. The title was held until then by Marion Maréchal, who, at 22 in 2012, had won in the 3rd district of Vaucluse.

It is now Tematai Le Gayic, a separatist supported by Nupes in the first constituency of French Polynesia, who replaces her. The latter does the feat of turning the cards between the first and the second round. His opponent, Nicole Bouteau, representative of the presidential majority who was Minister of Labor and Tourism for the overseas community, nevertheless gathered 42% of the votes on Sunday June 12. A week later, she lost by 672 votes. Within two months, the former president of the UNL high school student union and very media-friendly Louis Boyard, who has since become a student, took the place of the youngest. He wins today in the 3rd constituency of Val-de-Marne, also within Nupes.

On average, the deputies are 49 years old, that is to say within one year the average age of the candidates invested by Ensemble! and Republicans. The youngest are found in Nupes and the RN (45 years old on average). The three elected UDI deputies are the oldest (67 years old on average). The most senior of them, is overtaken by a year by the dean of the assembly: José Gonzalez, one of the many new deputies of the National Rally.

Gender: parity of applications, differences in results

For this new legislature, the number of women in the Assembly drops by 9 deputies. 2017 was the record year, with 224 women elected, or 38.8% of the 577 deputies. Among the major parties, it is in the RN where the difference in points between the proportion of women candidates and the proportion of women elected compared to men is the largest. A sign that the party’s male candidates are doing better than female candidates.

The law of June 6, 2000, reinforced over the years, obliges political parties to present an equal number of women and men for the legislative elections. However, this does not affect the constituencies chosen for the candidates of each party, which may be more or less favorable to them. This may explain, among other sociological factors, the discrepancy between the number of female candidates presented and the number of female candidates elected.

Profession: executives overrepresented in the Assembly

Already among the most present candidates, executives – who represent 21.6% of French people – are the socio-professional category most represented in the Assembly (27%). Then come the liberal professions (13%), closely followed by retirees (11%). Conversely, workers and students are under-represented in relation to the initial number of applicants. Of the 168 workers who presented themselves, four will sit in the Assembly (two Nupes, two RN), while of the 208 student-student candidates, only two were elected; the youngest to the historic record. Another MP whose profession is atypical in the Assembly: Franco-Ivorian Rachel Keke, who beat Emmanuel Macron’s former Minister of Sports, Roxana Maracineanu, in the 7th constituency of Val-de-Marne. She was the emblematic figure of the 22-month strike by chambermaids at the Ibis Batignolles hotel.
