Washington is imposing sanctions on hundreds of companies and individuals who support Russia. The Russian arms sector is also affected. The US Department of Commerce has announced further punitive measures.
The USA has imposed further sanctions against Moscow because of Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. The sanctions are aimed at around 400 companies and individuals, the Treasury Department in Washington announced. Among others, around 60 technology companies in the arms sector are affected, whose “products and services support Russia’s warmongering”.
“Today’s Treasury decisions are aimed at implementing the commitments made by President Joe Biden and his G7 colleagues to disrupt Russia’s supply chains,” said Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo. Companies in the financial sector are also affected. In addition, the aim is to further restrict Russian access to strategic minerals and mining, especially natural resources such as iron, steel and coal.
The companies and individuals affected are based in both Russia and other countries, it said. Around a hundred of them are based outside Russia, for example in China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Switzerland. They are accused of helping Moscow and its companies to circumvent the sanctions.
Ministry of Commerce wants to prevent sanctions evasion
The sanctions include, among other things, freezing the assets of the affected companies or individuals in the USA and a ban on US institutions or citizens doing business with the individuals or companies covered by the sanctions. The affected individuals are also prohibited from entering the USA.
In addition to the sanctions, the US Department of Commerce also announced “aggressive measures”. These are aimed at “illegal procurement networks” that are used to circumvent global export controls, the ministry said. The step is intended to further restrict the delivery of goods manufactured in the USA or labelled as such to Russia and Belarus.
