His candidacy raised a revolt for several weeks. The Emirati General Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, accused of torture, was elected president of Interpol on Thursday (November 25th), announced the international organization of criminal police.
The office of president is essentially honorary – the real boss of the organization being its secretary general – but human rights organizations and European elected representatives opposed the election of Mr. Al-Raisi, believing that ‘it would undermine Interpol’s mission. Inspector General of the Emirati Interior Ministry, Mr. Al-Raisi is the target of several complaints for “Torture” in France and Turkey.
