AIs in Cyberpunk 2077 aren’t usually very friendly, but this one could be a game-changer.

A mod (or rather a plugin) called CyberAI Project indeed allows the integration of the OpenAI API (and therefore of ChatGPT and others) in the title of CD Projekt RED to open up a whole range of new possibilities.

OpenAI obviously still exists in 2077

Integrating an AI into a game centered on the cyberpunk universe seemed to make sense. After MarioGPT and other similar experiments, it’s now the turn of Cyberpunk 2077 to go through the artificial intelligence box.

We owe this initiative to Tomatojui, a modder who developed the CyberAI Project plugin, available on Nexus Mods, cited in source below. This mod simply allows you to call different methods of the OpenAI API to modify the game script.

It is thus possible to call ChatGPT to modify Lua or Redscript in order for example to generate unique dialogues with non-player characters (to really chat with them, it is on the NVIDIA side that it happens).

An artificial world of possibilities?

Ultimately, CyberAI Project intends to integrate other models of artificial intelligence. As it stands, however, the possibilities offered by the OpenAI API alone are already dizzying. Tomatojui thus cited some applications offered by its plugin:

  • Dynamic plot generation: AI can generate various story elements or side quests that are based on in-game events or V’s actions;
  • Procedural mission planning, based on context, NPC data, and player preferences;
  • Interactive environment: it is possible using AI to generate responses from the environment to enhance immersion while exploring Night City;
  • Smart Enemy Tactics: AI is able to control enemies based on player strategy and actions to make battles more tactical (this wouldn’t hurt, given the current state of opponents’ AI) .

What’s more, the installation of this plugin is particularly simple (and of course only on PC). You just need to install RED4Ext, also available on Nexus Mods, and follow the following steps:

  • Download CyberAI from the Nexus Mods page;
  • Move CyberAI.dll and Settings.json to the game folder red4extpluginsCyberAI;
  • Open Settings.json and copy the OpenAI API key and organization id.

This is all explained in more detail on CyberAI Project’s Nexus Mods page. In any case, here’s a way like any other to spice up your adventures in Night City while you wait. Phantom Liberty, which is scheduled for release on September 26 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The novelties of this one and only extension could unfortunately make many mods obsolete, while waiting for their creators to update them.
