The Redmond giant offers a new product based on AI, which is aimed at American intelligence agencies. A new step in the militarization of technology?

Artificial intelligence has worried a lot of people since ChatGPT burst onto the public scene. It was quickly understood that this technology, with its capacity to generate realistic images, and even soon, videos, could seriously harm the perception of reality. Others have expressed concern about the potential military use of AI, which increasingly appears to be becoming commonplace, as demonstrated by the recent test of a fighter jet piloted by a human and another. driven by AI. Concerns which should further increase with the new product launched by Microsoft.

AI arrives in US intelligence agencies

AI is now available in all flavors. We learned at the start of the week that Google was launching an AI product intended for cybersecurity. Microsoft for its part, according to information from Bloomberglaunched a generative AI service intended for American intelligence agencies.

According to the American media, this service, which does not yet have a name, has been available to the American government since last week. Based on the GPT-4 language model, it must now be tested by the country’s services. We do not yet know how long this test phase will last, nor at what price it will be marketed.

A product built to meet security needs

What we do know, however, is that, given the services that will use it (we think of agencies like the CIA or the NSA), Microsoft has had to make special efforts in order to waterproof this AI. And not make it a source of breaches for United States intelligence.

This is the first time we have an isolated version – isolated means it is not connected to the internet – and it is on a special network accessible only by the US government » boasts the head of strategic missions and technology at Microsoft, William Chappell.
