Artificial intelligence has been a little less popular lately.

And it’s a report from the now famous strategy consulting firm McKinsey that says so.

Companies less interested

Baptized “The state of AI”, the annual report of the American cabinet shows us a reality of artificial intelligence slightly different from what the progress of a ChatGPT can augur.

Indeed, according to this document, the number of companies that have used the services of artificial intelligence has continued to decline in recent years. Of the 1,500 companies surveyed, 58% said they used this technology in 2019, compared to 56% in 2021, and above all 50% this year.

Overall, the adoption of AI is quite widespread in enterprises. But the use cases are not yet very sophisticated. Businesses struggle to scale and gain competitive advantage “, explains the leader of the digital and analytical division at McKinsey, Stéphane Bout.

Engineers hard to find

Indeed, certain problems arise with regard to a more qualitative use of artificial intelligence. In the economic field, this technology remains for the moment rather in the hands of data scientists, the engineers who use data to design AI models.

However, the transition to industrial application requires another type of practitioner: the machine learning engineer (automatic learning). This profile is rarer, and therefore more difficult to find. Among the companies surveyed by McKinsey, only 27% of them have recruited specialists. This helps to understand the picture drawn by Stéphane Bout: “ You really have to separate the basic level 1 AI, the predictive level 2 AI and finally, the advanced AI. Today, in many industries, we are more on the first two use cases. »

But while mass adoption isn’t on the doorstep yet, many industries are beginning to take advantage of AI. The bank or the distribution are already making fruitful use of it, as well as the field of health, as proven by this British artificial intelligence recently unveiled and which allows better treatment of stroke victims.
