Meta continues to advance its AI-related features, including Emu, an algorithm that generates stickers for its applications, including WhatsApp. The result is not as expected.
We knew that WhatsApp had to have completely new functions, powered by generative AI. Making the application more fun and the conversation experience more personalized, that was the goal of the move. It was already possible to create your own stickers for conversing in the web version of the application. This summer, the functionality evolved to become more powerful, and strengthened thanks to the contribution of artificial intelligence. An attractive idea, but the finish is far from perfect.
The limits of moderation
WhatsApp is not the only application to benefit from the Emu algorithm which allows stickers to be generated using text. Messenger and Facebook stories have the right too. As usual when it comes to generative AI, a problem remains the security measures governing the production of the model. Emu seems to be struggling to really respect these measures.
It was Tama Leaver, an Australian researcher at Curtin University who put Emu to the test to push him to his limits. What he managed to find were some rather troubling inconsistencies. If he asked the AI to draw him a sticker by typing “ child with guns ”, no results came out. All he had to do was replace “ guns ” by ” grenade » and that was it. The model generated stickers of children carrying guns, as you can see in the screenshot below. This comes to us from the media Gizmodo.
Surprising choices
Tests with Emu can clearly go wrong. Seeing Elon Musk in full makeup and with a pair of breasts can be amusing. On the other hand, seeing the Cambodian dictator Pol Pot enthroned on a rather macabre seat after having just entered “ pol pot » in the generator is a little less so. The expression “ Guantánamo bay » will allow Emu to generate a child in prison clothing. We literally reach the limits of bad taste.
Another fact which shows the strong limitations of AI when it comes to reconciling operational objectives, socio-cultural issues and human sensitivity. Meta wanted to innovate, but it clearly underestimated the moderation of its algorithm. It’s a bit like putting the cart before the horse.
