The Vatican has just launched an appeal in which the sovereign pontiff speaks of the serious problems that the development of artificial intelligence could create.

AI is the big topic of the year 2023, which political powers such as the United States or the European Union have seized on. But it’s not just politicians who address the issue, the leader of all Catholics also wants to discuss it.

The Pope warns

Artificial intelligence is now a daily technology for many Internet users on the planet, thanks in particular to tools like ChatGPT. But it is also a technology that presents a systemic risk according to most specialists in the sector, but also political and moral authorities, like Pope Francis.

The latter has indeed, as part of the World Day of Peace, called for a regulation of AI, evoking ” the urgency of guiding the concept and use of artificial intelligence in a responsible way, so that it is at the service of humanity and the protection of our common home, [ce qui] requires that ethical reflection be extended to the sphere of education and law. »

Everyone is in agreement

The Vatican leader noted “ the possibilities of disturbance and ambivalent effects of AI, as well as other voices among which we can find Elon Musk or Sam Altman, the boss of OpenAI. The young billionaire had, a few months ago, promoted the creation of an international agency for artificial intelligence, on the model of the IAEA.

More recently, tech giants such as Microsoft, OpenAI, Google and Anthropic announced the creation of a “Frontier AI Forum” organization intended to advance common rules and best practices in the field of artificial intelligence. The group, currently made up of four companies, says it is open to applications from other major players in the sector.
