Portofino is fighting against illegal air conditioning. Neighbors secretly photograph violations and report them to the police. The conflicts escalate.
It is very hot in Italy. Even in Portofino, known as the richest municipality in Italy. This magical place is located in a regional park that requires special protection. Until a few years ago, it was completely forbidden to install cooling air conditioning systems. Nowadays, they are available in isolated cases, but only with permission. But not all residents comply with this.
A real air conditioning war is currently raging in Portofino. In the exclusive coastal village with only 379 inhabitants, the local authorities have launched a raid on illegal air conditioning systems, as the “Guardian” reported.
Residents try to hide air conditioning units
Since June, 15 unauthorized devices have been discovered. According to the Guardian, some residents are trying to disguise their devices. There are reports that neighbors are secretly taking photos and forwarding them to the police. The Italian daily newspaperThe Sera Corriere” reports of real “campaigns of revenge” among neighbors.
The mayor of Portofino, Matteo Viacava, told the Guardian: “We don’t want people to suffer, but Portofino is in a regional park and there are rules that must be respected.” Violations can be punished with fines of up to 43,000 euros.
The Guardian further reports that tensions between residents are increasing and mutual accusations are piling up.
