Air France takes off again in the second quarter despite staffing problems at airports

In the second quarter of 2022, the national airline Air France recorded a net result of 324 million euros, an improvement of 1.8 billion euros compared to the same quarter last year. EBITDA picked up sharply from -249 million euros to 931 million euros.

In the second quarter of 2022, the recovery in demand for leisure traffic in Europe and North Africa continued. Compared to last year, capacity in the second quarter increased by 221.9%, while traffic increased by 358.2% and the number of passengers by 346.8%. Last year, the second quarter was strongly affected by travel restrictions in Europe and North Africa.

As of June 30, 2022, the group has a high level of cash and credit lines, 11.9 billion euros. Air France-KLM/Air France repaid 1.6 billion euros of perpetual French government bonds (coupon included), with the objective of repaying at least 75% as soon as possible.

Despite the anticipatory efforts initiated since January to prepare for the traffic growth expected this summer, operational difficulties have arisen in Europe and the United States, mainly due to the lack of staff at the airports.

The yield environment should nevertheless remain favorable for the rest of 2022 with strong summer demand leading to higher yield levels than 2019.
