BANGALORE/PARIS (Reuters) – Air India, owned by Indian conglomerate Tata Group, has sealed a landmark order from Airbus and Boeing for around 500 aircraft worth more than $100 billion (93.5 billion euros) at list price , industry sources told Reuters.

The order, split roughly equally between the two aircraft manufacturers, could be announced early next week, the sources said.

Air India plans to acquire 250 Airbus – 210 A320neos single-aisle and 40 A350 twin-aisle aircraft – and 220 Boeing – 190 wider 737 MAX, 20 787 and 10 777X single-aisle aircraft.

It is not known if orders with option are included in this total.

Airbus declined to comment. Air India could not be reached.

Taken over a year ago, on January 27, 2022, by Tata Group, the former public company is seeking to modernize its fleet and compete with its competitors, mainly Gulf companies such as Emirates, in the vast market represented by travel between the Indian diaspora abroad and metropolises like Delhi or Bombay.

The acquisition of 400 single-aisle aircraft will also allow Air India to expand in the domestic market against its low-cost rival IndiGo.

This historic order should place Air India among the world’s leading airlines and strengthen its influence with aircraft manufacturers and suppliers at a time when the Indian market is experiencing a strong rebound after the health crisis linked to COVID-19.
