Air Liquide obtains EU funding for the construction of a CO2 transport hub at the port – 12/12/2022 at 10:06


(AOF) – The European Commission has announced that it will grant Air Liquide, Fluxys Belgium and Port of Antwerp-Bruges aid of 144.6 million euros under the CEF-E (Connecting Europe Facility) financing program for Energy). This financing is intended for the construction of joint facilities for the transport and export of CO2 on the port platform of Antwerp in Belgium. This grant is a major step towards the final investment decision, expected in 2023.

The project, baptized “Antwerp@C CO2 Export Hub”, is designed as an open-access infrastructure to transport, liquefy and load CO2 onto ships for permanent storage at sea. industrial players from the Antwerp port platform will be collected and transported via an open-access intra-port pipeline network. A common liquefaction and export terminal will be built, including a CO2 liquefaction unit, intermediate storages and maritime loading facilities for its cross-border transport. This innovative project will be one of the world’s first and largest open-access multimodal CO2 export facilities.

Nothing is going well for German chemistry

German chemicals, very dependent on Russian gas, are in difficulty. Following sluggish sales in the automotive sector and falling demand in construction, production is down 8.5% in 2022, with overall sales down 1.6% to 63.1 Billions of Euro’s. Specialty chemicals are doing better. On the other hand, the production capacity utilization rate in basic chemicals has slowed markedly to less than 80%.
