Airbnb has changed its surveillance policy to include a complete, worldwide ban on security cameras inside a home – even in common areas. This change will take effect on April 30, to give hosts time to comply with the new rule.
Surveillance devices located outdoors are still authorized, but the new version of the platform’s general conditions specifies their framework of use. Complete instructions are provided for security cameras, but also connected doorbells and noise detectors.
“Our goal was to create clear new rules that allow our community to better know what to expect with Airbnb,” explains Juniper Downs, head of community and partnerships for the platform. “These changes were made in consultation with our hosts, travelers and our privacy experts. We will continue to solicit feedback to ensure our policy works for our community around the world. »
What surveillance devices are allowed in Airbnbs?
Before this change, Airbnb allowed surveillance cameras located indoors only in common areas, and provided that their presence was specified on the listing and visible to travelers. The use of cameras in areas considered private, such as a bathroom or bedroom, was prohibited.
Furthermore, guests can still install noise detectors – only in the common areas of their property – but they must report their presence. These detectors can be used to monitor the security of travelers or accommodation, or to detect the presence of unregistered people – prohibited by Airbnb regulations – but they must not record or transmit noises or discussions.
In addition to banning indoor surveillance tools, Airbnb clarifies the framework for the use of outdoor cameras: hosts must indicate the location of their outdoor cameras, including connected doorbells with video, before guests have reserved the accommodation. The new T&Cs of the platform specify that these cameras cannot be directed towards areas that require a certain amount of privacy, indoors or outdoors. For example, filming in the direction of outdoor showers is prohibited.
If you notice that a host has violated these new rules after April 30, you can report them directly to Airbnb. The platform then plans to remove the ad or the host’s account, depending on the results of the investigation.
