June 28 (Reuters) – Airbnb Inc announced on Tuesday that it would permanently ban hosting parties at properties listed on its platform, following a significant drop in reports of illegal gatherings since the ban took effect in August 2020.

The company said it has seen a 44% year-over-year drop in party reporting rates since the policy was implemented.

The company had banned festive gatherings in August 2020 as part of measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Airbnb also plans to reverse the occupancy rate limit set so far at 16 people.

More than 6,600 guests and “hosts” were suspended in 2021 for trying to circumvent the party ban, the company said. (Gigi Zamora report; additional report Doyinsola Oladipo; French version Alizée Degorce, edited by Sophie Louet)
