(Boursier.com) — Thai Airways International is reportedly close to placing a large order for wide-body aircraft withAirbus and of Boeing. According to people familiar with the matter cited by ‘Bloomberg’, the Asian airline is expected to acquire 80 long-haul planes as part of a deal that would include firm orders, options and purchasing rights. It would also be on the verge of concluding an agreement for the rental of a dozen small aircraft, the sources said.
The carrier has not yet decided on the final makeup of the deal, and the contours of the order could still change, some of the people pointed out, adding that a deal could come in the coming weeks. The deal could nevertheless include up to 40 Boeings, most probably the 787 Dreamliner model, while the Airbus order would depend on the engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce, the sole supplier of the A350 and A330neo planes. The Thai boss recently criticized Rolls Royce for its tougher pricing stance.
Thai Airways operates around 65 planes, up from 103 before the Covid pandemic, and is still subject to a court-supervised debt rehabilitation plan after filing for bankruptcy protection in 2020. It hopes to emerge from this program next year. More than 50% of its staff was made redundant as part of the restructuring.
