The aviation industry is in its worst crisis since World War II. The corona pandemic caused air traffic to collapse. The consequences are airline bankruptcies and mass layoffs. And despite the progress made in vaccination: Experts expect the industry to return to pre-crisis levels in 2025 at the earliest.
Many airlines have therefore withdrawn their jets earlier than planned. Emirates, for example, announced on Tuesday that it would no longer operate five A380s.
Individual parts are recycled
Because parking spaces at airports are expensive, more and more jets land in so-called aircraft graveyards. The world’s largest aircraft graveyard is located in Tucson (Arizona, USA). There are many more in America – but machines also find their final resting place in Germany, France and Spain.
Jets such as A380 or Boeing 747 are scrapped in the cemeteries. The individual parts are partially recycled. Click through our picture gallery to see the spectacular images. (nim)
