The AirPods 3 are coming to the shelves: Is it possible to buy the new generation even compared to the Pro version?

The new in-ear headphones from Apple will be on the shelves from tomorrow. The technology company from Cupertino will then bring the AirPods 3 onto the market for 199 euros. The news agency spot on news had the opportunity to test the new product in advance. Is it worth switching from the 2nd to the 3rd generation? And are the new AirPods possibly even better than the Pro version for 279 euros?

New design

When unpacking, of course, you immediately notice the new case, which, like the Pro version, can now also be charged via MagSafe. The headphones themselves are also optically based on the more expensive mini speakers. Only the silicone attachments are missing. The shaft has become significantly shorter and the angle of attack has been adjusted to enable more comfortable wearing and a better sound. But be careful: If you have smaller ears, we recommend a short try-out before buying, as the basic shape is quite large.

Updated technology

The inner workings of the AirPods 3 have been adapted to the latest requirements. Among other things, the makers installed the current 3D audio system with dynamic head tracking, a special high-excursion woofer and an adaptive equalizer. Telephoning was also pleasant and did not lead to any loss of quality for the other person due to the fact that the microphones were quite far away from the mouth. Difference to the AirPods Pro: The third generation AirPods do not have the ability of active noise suppression. Apple also did without the transparency mode. So technically they are still a bit behind the pros.

The best battery performance of any AirPods

If it is important to you that your AirPods remain functional for as long as possible, you can hardly avoid the 3rd generation. In the test, up to six hours of playback could be achieved with just one charge. That coincides with the manufacturer’s information. If you add the charging options with the case, you even get 30 hours. For comparison: The Pro version lasts 4.5 hours and around 24 hours of playback with a charging case, the 2nd generation 5 or 24 hours.

Conclusion:

Compared to the second generation from 2019, the Apple AirPods 3 make a clear leap forward, especially technically, and approach the Pro version. Those who rely on battery power and solid sound should opt for the third series. However, if you can’t do without active noise canceling and silicone attachments instead of hard plastic in the ear, you will still have to use the AirPods Pro.
