AirTag: security that leaves something to be desired?
Marketed in 2021, and sold in several tens of millions of copies, the AirTag is particularly popular with users of Apple products. Perfectly integrated into the ecosystem, this little tracker can quickly become essential for the less fortunate among you (or the more airheaded). Its success should even allow it to return in a brand new iteration, since AirTags 2 would be in Apple’s pipeline.
Unfortunately, and as is all too often the case with technology, some people would use the AirTag for malicious and simply illegal purposes. The specialized site 9to5Mac reports to us that Apple did not take adequate measures to protect victims of murder and harassment.
Harassment, murder, kidnapping: when the use of the AirTag is beyond comprehension
In the United States, a collective of several dozen people was recently set up to challenge the security problems caused by the AirTag. If the Californian company has already published various updates to make its device more effective against spies, this unfortunately does not seem to have been enough to prevent tragedies from occurring. This is why nearly forty individuals, including some victims of harassment, came together to take new legal action against the Cupertino company.
In December 2022, in San Francisco, a first complaint had already been filed for reasons with serious consequences. In the state of Indiana, a woman went so far as to track her partner after hiding an AirTag in his car. She then followed him to a bar and ended up hitting him with her own vehicle, causing his death. The victim’s mother is also at the origin of this first complaint filed at the end of last year.
According to information reported by 9to5Mac, more than 150 cases of harassment caused by the Apple accessory were reported to the police during the first 18 months following its launch. Even more dramatic, the AirTag is believed to be the cause of several murders and kidnappings in recent months in the United States.
