Alain Delon, the trip to kyiv

HASlain Delon should soon go to kyiv to demonstrate his support for the Ukrainian cause in the face of Russian aggression. The 86-year-old actor responded enthusiastically to Volodymyr Zelensky’s invitation, which was conveyed to him on Friday by Ukraine’s Ambassador to France, Vadym Omelchenko. The visit of the “Samouraï” should be one of the highlights of a special program designed and produced by his friend Cyril Viguier for Canal+ and TV5 Monde, which will be broadcast in 200 countries and in 22 languages. For this project, Delon – visibly well recovered from the stroke he suffered in 2019 – has already shot several sequences in Paris in undisclosed locations, notably interpreting texts devoted to freedom taken from the book Our soul can’t diethe work of the poet Taras Shevchenko, considered a national hero in Ukraine.

Other scenes will be shot at the end of the month at the Ukrainian Cultural Institute in Paris, where an exhibition dedicated to the French star is being held on the personal idea of President Zelensky, an actor himself and admirer of Delon. The address is well known to the person concerned since this private mansion near Parc Monceau is none other than his former home. During the sixties, the building housed the love of the actor with Romy Schneider and Nathalie Delon, and the childhood of his son Anthony. It also served as the setting for a very real news item that turned into a political scandal: the Markovic affair, named after a Yugoslav playboy killed by a revolver bullet in 1968 and whose murder was never elucidated. Hero’s Handyman The swimming pool and of full sun, Stevan Markovic resided in an apartment on the ground floor… Delon having left the building after the case without ever returning since 1971, he was touched to hear the Ukrainian ambassador tell him that his country still considers him as “co-owner”. One of the lounges has also been entirely reconstructed with period furniture.

Cautious tribute

Following in this his American counterparts Sean Penn and Ben Stiller, who have both visited the Ukrainian capital in recent months, Delon hopes to give the kyiv authorities the benefit of some of his notoriety, particularly in Asia, to denounce the attempt invasion launched by Vladimir Putin. In an interview with TV5 Monde and Paris Match last year, the actor had paid a cautious tribute to the Russian leader: “Doing what he has been doing for years, you have to be able. Now, how he does it, I don’t know,” he said, adding that his strength “causes admiration and awe.” On the other hand, he proclaimed his “passion” for the American president and took a date: “When Joe Biden comes on an official trip to France, you call me! And that there will be a state dinner, I will be there. In the meantime, he is preparing his trip to kyiv, whose security will be provided by the Ukrainian government.
