Aged 77 today, the former deputy and mayor of Redon (Ille-et-Vilaine) held several ministerial responsibilities under François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac. First Minister of Industry, Posts and Telecommunications and Tourism between 1986 and 1988, then Minister of Business and Economic Development from 1993 to 1995, and finally Minister of Economy and Finance from May to August 1995. Alain Madelin was a member of the Republican Party and of the UDF. In the summer of 1997, he transformed the Republican Party into a Liberal Democracy, a party of which he remained president until 2002. In 2007, he announced his retirement from political life.
