Alarm in Weinviertel – 250-kilo bomb found on construction site

You don’t see something like this every day: During preliminary work for a flood protection project in the Weinviertel (Lower Austria), experts came across a sharp war relic. “The 25-kilo bomb was probably dropped to support the fight against Soviet ground troops,” suspects one of the experts.

The discovery of a 250-kilo German mine bomb SC250 in Velm-Götzendorf, in the district of Gänserndorf, came as a surprise even to the professionals at EOD Munitionsbergung. “These were used in the war against railway stations, railway embankments or underpasses. But there were no such strategic goals in the region,” says Managing Director Stefan Plainer. Support against ground troopsNevertheless, his employees Armin Kolbe and Daniel Teleaga discovered the sharp war relic during routine investigations of the ground on which flood protection is being built. “The bomb was probably dropped to support the fight against Soviet ground troops,” Plainer suspects. The duo uncovered the explosive device, the demining service defused it and transported it away. Due to the location, in contrast to a similar find at Schwechat Airport (“Krone” reported), there was no sensational evacuation.
