Alaska Daily on Disney+: the series that relaunched Hilary Swank’s career


Launching on February 8 on Disney+, the original series Alaska Daily immerses us in the daily life of an investigative journalist in search of redemption, who moves to Alaska. A project by Tom McCarthy, the director of the acclaimed film Spotlight!

WHAT IS IT ABOUT ?

After a hard blow, renowned journalist Eileen Fitzgerald leaves New York to make a new start in Alaska. Will his arrival in the daily Anchorage team allow him to find some redemption?

The Alaska Daily series is broadcast on Disney+ at the rate of one episode per week until March 15, then from March 29 to April 26.

NEW START

After the triumph of the excellent Spotlight, which won the Oscar for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay in 2016, director Tom McCarthy once again demonstrates his admiration for the world of investigative journalism with the series Alaska Daily, arrived recently Disney+.

At the top of the bill, Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby, Boys Don’t Cry) plays Eileen Fitzgerald, a tenacious and obstinate New York journalist. Following a huge professional misconduct that tarnishes her reputation, she agrees to join the editorial staff of the Daily Alaskan, a daily newspaper in the city of Anchorage in Alaska, far from the tumult of the Big Apple.

On site, she is entrusted with the mission of investigating the disappearances and murders of young indigenous women, almost always neglected by the local police, in this isolated state of the United States. To help her carry out her research, she collaborates with her counterpart Roz Friendly, whose cousin is one of the many victims. His outspokenness and his methods nevertheless quickly disconcert his new colleagues.

AN IMPORTANT SUBJECT

The drama is notably inspired by a series of articles from The Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica collected under the title Lawless: Sexual Violence in Alaskaand awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2020. The events narrated on screen, however, are not based on real events or real people.

Kyle Hopkins, the journalist at the head of this project, spent several months with the writers, as explained in an article of DNAand is quoted as an executive producer, alongside Hilary Swank and Tom McCarthy among others.

If the broadcast of Alaska Daily has only just started in France, it has already been several months since the American public was able to discover the first episodes. On January 10, at the 80th Golden Globes ceremony, Hilary Swank was one of the 5 nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama Series category thanks to this role.

On screen, the Oscar-winning actress is surrounded by Jeff Perry (Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy), Grace Dove, Matt Malloy, Meredith Holzman, Pablo Castelblanco, Ami Park and Craig Frank.
