Aldi notebooks: Once well equipped, twice hands off

Both Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd want to add three Medion notebooks to their range on January 27, 2022. One of them, the Erazer Defender P15, is suitable for gaming with AMD’s Ryzen 7 5800H eight-core processor in combination with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3060 and is fairly priced at 1500 euros. On the other hand, we cannot recommend the two work notebooks because of their equipment and price structure.

Due to the gaming focus, Medion uses a 17.3-inch IPS display with Full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels) and a refresh rate of 144 Hertz for the Erazer Defender P15. The GeForce RTX 3060 with a maximum power limit of 130 watts should be well suited for Full HD gaming. Aside from games, the resolution is comparatively low. 16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM and a 1 TB PCI Express 3.0 SSD with preinstalled Windows 11 Home round off the hardware.

Wi-Fi 6 and NBaseT Ethernet with 2.5 Gbit/s in the form of an RJ45 connection are on board. Of the four USB ports, two transmit data at 10 Gbit/s (USB 3.2 Gen 2), including a Type-C connection with DisplayPort function. A Mini-DisplayPort 1.4 and one HDMI (version not named) are available as additional image outputs. The Erazer Defender P15 weighs 2.4 kg.

Similarly equipped notebooks from other manufacturers can be found in the price comparison from around 1400 euros. Most models exceed the 1500 euro mark.

Meanwhile, the Akoya E14308 for 350 euros and the Ayoka S15449 for 1000 euros are configured unbalanced. The Akoya E14308, for example, uses AMD’s lame Zen 1 dual-core 3020e with a maximum clock frequency of just 2.6 GHz and without simultaneous multithreading (SMT) – i.e. with only two threads. In addition, there is only 4 GB of RAM and apparently TN technology on the 14-inch full HD screen. The Akoya E14304 from last year with AMD’s Ryzen 3 4300U, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD for 430 euros was much better equipped.

The Akoya S15449, which costs 1000 euros, is fast enough for common office work with Intel’s Tiger Lake quad-core Core i7-1165G7 and 16 GB DDR4-3200 RAM, but the unnecessarily large PCIe SSD with 2 TB drives the price up. If you are content with a 1 TB SSD, you can get a comparable device for as little as 600 euros. Models with Thunderbolt 4, which the Akoya notebook lacks, are available from 850 euros.

Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd will sell the Akoya E14308 in their branches from January 27, 2022. The Ayoka S15449 and Erazer Defender P15 will be available in Aldi’s online shop throughout Germany on the same day.
