Aldi rushes forward: The discounter announced that it would be offering corona rapid tests for home use from Saturday. From Tuesday, drugstore chains and other supermarkets want to follow.

Corona tests are an important component in combating the corona pandemic. As long as there are not enough vaccine doses available to achieve herd immunity, the aim is to use rapid antigen tests as widely as possible. That is what the federal government has decided. With the self-tests, further relaxation could be secured immunologically.

Big rush expected

As several media reports unanimously, Aldi will make the start on Saturday: From March 6, both Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord will offer the rapid tests for home use. At the start, sales are limited to one pack per customer.

  • The pack of 5 tests should cost 24.99 euros
  • The result should be available in 15 minutes
  • The detection rate is said to be 96 percent

Since this is a special offer, it must be expected that the test will sell out quickly. "If the rapid tests should be sold out on the first day of the campaign due to the high demand, we ask our customers for their understanding," Aldi is quoted at Chip.de as being quoted.

Aldi sells the Aesku Group's rapid antigen test, which is manufactured in Germany. A nasal swab must be taken for the rapid corona test. So far, only medically trained personnel have been allowed to perform these tests. That should now change with the freely available rapid tests.

Others will follow suit next week

The drugstore chains Rossmann and dm want to follow suit next Tuesday. Food companies such as Lidl, Rewe, Edeka and Netto are also in the starting blocks. The test kits for home use will soon also be available in pharmacies. Overall, one expects an enormously high demand.
