Alexandre Saubot on the carbon border tax: “We are not convinced”

MAINTENANCE – Alexandre Saubot, president of France Industrie, reacts to the implementation of the carbon border adjustment mechanism (MACF).

LE FIGARO. – Brussels will set up a carbon border adjustment mechanism. Is this a good thing?

Alexandre SAUBOT. – It’s about saving the planet by reducing global CO emissions2. We fully share this decarbonization objective and we believe that the industry has the means to further decarbonize. But we are very careful that the reduction in emissions from European industry is not primarily the result of our deindustrialisation. We are not convinced that the announced provisions protect us from this risk.

Why is that?

Our concerns were not sufficiently taken into account. The method for assessing the carbon content of a product is not clearly defined, and the risk of circumvention remains high. This is particularly the case when taking into account the mode of energy production – which plays a considerable role in the final carbon footprint of a product.
