Alfons Schuhbeck begins his prison sentence. The star chef, convicted of tax evasion, has been in prison in Landsberg since Wednesday.

Star chef Alfons Schuhbeck (74) began his sentence today, Wednesday (23 August). This was confirmed by Monika Groß, head of the Landsberg am Lech correctional facility, the “Augsburg General”.

A spokeswoman for the Munich I public prosecutor’s office announced on Friday (August 18) that the summons to begin custody in the morning “was handed over personally to Mr. Schuhbeck’s legal representative, who informed his client.” Schuhbeck will begin detention “in the coming days,” it said.

Millions of dollars in tax evasion

Alfons Schuhbeck was sentenced to three years and two months in prison in October 2022 for tax evasion in the millions. Schuhbeck appealed the verdict. The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) largely confirmed the verdict in June 2023, it was “substantially final”. The Munich I Regional Court only had to renegotiate the seizure of Schuhbeck’s assets, the BGH announced at the time. However, this does not change anything in terms of imprisonment.

The BGH saw it as proven that Schuhbeck “daily withdrew cash from the cash registers of two restaurants, including the Südtiroler Stuben, a total of more than 4.2 million euros” in the period from 2009 to 2015. Among other things, he used a computer program written by his employee to manipulate the sales. Schuhbeck “evaded a total of more than 1.2 million euros in income tax,” as the BGH further announced.

Uli Hoeneß was also imprisoned here

Schuhbeck’s friend, Bayern legend Uli Hoeneß (71), also served his sentence for tax evasion in Landsberg am Lech prison. He was sentenced to three and a half years in prison. He began his sentence on June 2, 2014, in January 2015 he was released and was allowed to work again at Bayern Munich.
