Alien: the new film begins shooting, we know the story, the director and the cast

After four films, two crossovers and two prequels, the ninth “Alien”, announced last year, will finally start filming.

20th Century Fox

As ComingSoon reports, 20th Century Studios and The Walt Disney Company have announced that the ninth Alien movie, tentatively titled Alien: Romulus, is set to begin production in Budapest, Hungary on March 9, 2023.

On the production side, it will be Fede Álvarez who will be in charge of bringing to the screen a screenplay by Rodo Sayagues, his lifelong accomplice. Specialized in horror, the two Uruguayan friends are not at their first attempt: we owe them in particular the remake of Evil Dead in 2013 and Don’t Breathe – The House of Darkness (2016). Fede Álvarez also signed the thriller Millenium: What does not kill me (2018) with Claire Foy.

Ridley Scott, iconic director of the original Alien, will executive produce the film alongside Michael Pruss under their Scott Free banner, while Brent O’Connor, Elizabeth Cantillon and Tom Moran will serve as executive producers.

AN INDEPENDENT HISTORY

On the continuity side, this new opus would be “unrelated” to the previous films. A fan of the iconic franchise himself, Fede Álvarez pitched an idea to Ridley Scott several years ago during a casual chat. This finally led him to call the director to see if he was still interested: everything then accelerated.

Indeed, 20th Century decided to produce the film from then on because of the strength of Álvarez’s voice, since the script told “a really good story with a bunch of characters you’ve never seen before”, according to Steve Asbell from 20th Century.

In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people from a distant world come face to face with the universe’s most terrifying lifeform.,” reads the synopsis for the upcoming drama.

The film will star Cailee Spaeny (Mare of Easttown, The First Lady), Isabela Merced (Rosaline, Dora and the Lost City), Archie Renaux (Morbius, Shadow and Bone: The Grisha Saga), Spike Fearn (The Batman, Aftersun ), David Jonsson (Industry) and Aileen Wu (Away from Home).

While waiting to be able to discover Alien: Romulus, the entire saga is to (re) see streaming on Disney +.
