Giffey resigns as family minister
The Merkel cabinet loses Franziska Giffey as family minister a few months before the federal election. The background are allegations about her doctoral thesis. As the top candidate in Berlin, however, the SPD politician wants to continue to run.
Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey has submitted her resignation. She announced this in the morning at the meeting of the Federal Cabinet, according to her ministry. The background is therefore the allegations against Giffey because of her doctoral thesis.
As it was said from party circles, however, she wanted to hold on to her top SPD candidate for the Berlin House of Representatives election in the fall. The problem with the doctoral thesis was already known when she was running. She herself had always emphasized that consequences only had to be drawn for her office as Federal Minister.
