Alleged pact with Ukraine: Moscow threatens Moldova with “violence and chaos”

Moscow threatens Moldova with “violence and chaos”

Moldova is defending itself with all its might against Russian attacks, drawing the wrath of Moscow. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zakharova accuses the small ex-Soviet republic of a military pact with Ukraine. She also uses fake news for her threatening gestures.

The spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, addressed the former Soviet Republic of Moldova with threatening words. If Moldova plans to become a “logistical hub” for the army of neighboring Ukraine, it will invite violence and chaos into its home, Zakharova said at her weekly press briefing.

A few weeks ago, pro-Kremlin media outlets claimed that the pro-European Moldovan President Maia Sandu had suggested that the Ukrainian army be allowed to use Moldovan territory for military purposes. Chisinau has long since dismissed these statements as false news.

Zakharova had previously criticized the planned reduction in Russian diplomats in Moldova. Like Ukraine, Moldova is an EU accession candidate. In the small and poverty-stricken country, Russia has also traditionally had a major influence – particularly in the breakaway region of Transnistria, where Russian soldiers have been stationed since the 1990s.

Zelenskyi promises liberation of Transnistria

In the course of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, international observers repeatedly warned that Moscow could use unrest in the region as an excuse to escalate the situation. Sandu has recently repeatedly complained about interference and planned coup attempts by Russian secret services in her country.

Last week, the constitutional court in Chinsnau classified the pro-Russian Shor party as anti-constitutional and thus banned it. The party is named after its founder, Ilan Shor, an oligarch sentenced in absentia to 15 years in prison. Schor is said to have been involved in the disappearance of $1 billion from Moldovan banks in 2014.

Speaking in parliament in Kiev, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a victory for Ukraine over Russia would also help Moldova and Georgia regain their Russian-controlled territories. In addition to Transnistria in Moldova, these are the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia.
