Six people were killed in an attack on a police station in southern Iran.
According to state television, two police officers and four attackers were among the dead.
The background to the attack is still unclear.
A reporter from state television spoke of a heavy firefight. Several shots can be heard on a street on videos on social media intended to show the incident. Several men are said to have been involved in the attack on the police post in the city of Zahedan in Sistan and Balochistan province. This was reported by the state news agency IRNA.
State media described the attack as a terrorist attack. The attackers were equipped with explosive belts, writes the Tasnim news agency. A senior provincial officer said in an interview that they were firecrackers.
It was not immediately known who was responsible for the attack. The province of Sistan and Balochistan is one of the poorest regions in Iran. Security forces have been repeatedly killed there in recent years.
In addition, residents in the provincial capital Zahedan have been demonstrating against the Islamic state leadership every Friday for months. The province also borders Pakistan and has been a hotbed of clashes between security forces and smuggling gangs.
