FC Hansa Rostock must join Osnabrück on the path to the 3rd league. On the last matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga, the Baltic club gambled away the win – and faces a massive penalty. The match against SC Paderborn was interrupted for almost 30 minutes shortly before the end.

After an undignified season finale with fan riots, Hansa Rostock has to make the bitter journey to the 3rd football league. On the last second division matchday, coach Mersad Selimbegovic’s team lost 1-2 (0-0) against SC Paderborn and thus missed the hoped-for jump to relegation place 16. A few minutes before the end, riots overshadowed the sport, the game was about to begin the demolition.

Paderborn’s Felix Platte (72nd) and Adriano Grimaldi (87th) shot Hansa into the third division. Nils Fröling (48th) scored for Rostock, who were only promoted back to the 2nd league in 2021 after a nine-year absence. SV Wehen Wiesbaden is 16th in the table. now have the opportunity to save themselves in the two relegation games against third division Jahn Regenburg on May 24th and 28th.

After a somewhat sluggish start, Rostock had the first chance to score. A deflected cross suddenly landed at Janik Bachmann (10th minute), who failed to hit the ball fully eight metres from the goal and shot it over the goal. After that, Rostock conceded little, but at the same time found it extremely difficult to make an offensive impact.

At the beginning of the second half, Hansa came out of the locker room with momentum and benefited from a major mistake by Paderborn goalkeeper Pelle Boevink, who stumbled after a back pass so that Froling was able to poke the ball into the goal. However, the SCP should also have their chances, Rostock goalkeeper Markus Kolke made a strong save against Grimaldi (63′). A little later, however, it was Kolke who made a serious mistake when he let Platte’s harmless shot slip through. Grimaldi’s header sealed Rostock’s fate.

Shortly before the end, Hansa fans lit firecrackers and shot pyrotechnics towards the field, referee Harm Osmers sent the teams into the dressing room and interrupted the game. After almost 30 minutes, the teams returned to the pitch and brought the game to an end in front of half-empty stands.
