Alonso surprises in Canada – Verstappen dominates qualifying – Leclerc starts from 19th place – Sport

  • Max Verstappen clearly secures pole position in Montreal ahead of surprise man Fernando Alonso.
  • Charles Leclerc is transferred as a penalty and has to start from 19th place.
  • The two Alfa Romeo drivers Guanyu Zhou and Valtteri Bottas will start from positions 10 and 11.

He had already indicated in practice 1 and 2 that he liked the track in Canada when he came back after a 2-year absence from the Formula 1 calendar. In the wet qualifying, Max Verstappen then set a clear exclamation point: the Dutchman in the Red Bull outclassed his competitors, with his lap time of 1:21.299 minutes he distanced everyone by more than 6 tenths of a second.

Somewhat surprisingly, the winner of the 3rd training session, Fernando Alonso, came in second. The Spaniard from Alpine put himself in front of his compatriot Carlos Sainz. The Ferrari driver lost almost 8 tenths of a second on Verstappen.

Leclerc has to roll up the field from behind

Meanwhile, his teammate and current World Cup third Charles Leclerc has to start the race from the back row. After the defect in Baku, the Monegasque is forced to have various parts (control electronics, MGU-H, MGU-K, combustion engine, turbo) replaced on his car. Since he has already exhausted the quota for some of these parts, he was penalized to 19th place. Yuki Tsunoda suffered the same fate, starting from 20th place.

Zhou in top 10, Botta’s 11th.

Guanyu Zhou should have a better and better feeling. While the Chinese was clearly behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas at the beginning of the season, he was now ahead of the Finns in qualifying for the second time in a row. Zhou starts 10th, Bottas 11th.
