(CercleFinance.com) – Google unveiled on Tuesday a new range of processors designed in-house and entirely dedicated to its activities in data centers.
The new server chips designed by the Alphabet subsidiary, called ‘Google Axion’, are based on an Arm architecture expected to generate up to 60% energy savings compared to Intel’s x86 range.
Google says it plans to offer the chip to customers of its cloud computing arm Google Cloud by the end of the year.
With performance described as 50% higher than current generations, the Californian group says it has already deployed several of its services on servers equipped with Arm technology, including the Google Earth mapping tool and YouTube advertising features.
Other projects should follow.
Google made its foray into the chip segment in 2015 with the launch of its Tensor accelerators (TPU) which was followed in 2018 by the development of a video processing unit (VPU) 33 times faster.
In 2021, the company unveiled its own system-on-chip (SoC) as well as three new Tensor chips aimed at mobile devices.
All of these announcements were made at the Google Cloud Next ’24 conference, which opened today in Las Vegas.
On the New York Stock Exchange, Alphabet shares, Google’s parent company, advanced 0.8% at the start of Tuesday’s session, outperforming American stock markets in the red.
