Stan Wawrinka lost to Czech Tomas Machac in three sets 6:7 (3:7), 6:4, 2:6 in Indian Wells.
Stan Wawrinka (ATP 70) won’t really get up to speed in 2024. The French had to admit defeat to Tomas Machac (ATP 63) in Indian Wells after just over two hours of play in three sets 6:7 (3:7), 6:4, 2:6.
Wawrinka has only been able to win one game this year. In Buenos Aires he defeated Pedro Cachin. He was eliminated at the first opportunity at the Australian Open (Adrian Mannarino), in Rio de Janeiro (Facundo Diaz) and now at the ATP 1000 tournament in California.
Against the Czech Machac, 15 years his junior, Wawrinka led 3-1 with a break in the first set, but gave up the lead and lost the round in the tiebreak. The 38-year-old then fought his way back into the match, but paid for his effort in the deciding set, in which he gave up his serve three times. Machac had already brought the Swiss to his knees in the first duel between the two last autumn in Stockholm.
