Wolfsburg women on course for victory in the DFB Cup

VfL Wolfsburg are only two wins away from triumphing again in the women’s DFB Cup. The German soccer champions won the quarter-finals at 1. FC Köln without any problems. In addition to Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg, a lower-class club also made it into the top four.

The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg have expanded their great DFB Cup series and are on course for the final triumph for the ninth year in a row. The doubles winners prevailed 4-0 (2-0) in the quarter-finals at first division rivals 1. FC Köln on Tuesday evening, meaning Wolfsburg won their 43rd cup game in a row. Bayern Munich is also in the semifinals, the runners-up won 2-0 (0-0) at TSG Hoffenheim.

SC Freiburg and, surprisingly, second division leaders RB Leipzig complete the semi-finals. The Leipzig women finished off the first division team SGS Essen 6: 1 (4: 0) and are the only lower-class club still there. Freiburg hardly had any problems with a 4-0 (2-0) win at second division Carl Zeiss Jena.

In front of 3521 fans in Viktoria Köln’s stadium, the Wolfsburg women clearly dominated the game against FC from the start. Ewa Pajor (24th) and the German internationals Svenja Huth (42nd), Marina Hegering (66th) and Jule Brand (88th) scored for the German champions. Munich had more work to do in Hoffenheim, but substitute Maximiliane Rall (68th) and Klara Bühl (77th) still ensured the deserved favorite win.

The semifinals will be drawn next Sunday (5:15 p.m. / Sky). The long-time Bundesliga coach Mirko Slomka then draws the pairings, he stands in for record national player Lothar Matthäus, who was originally intended. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf takes on the task of drawing manager. The semifinals will take place from April 15th to 17th, the final in Cologne’s Rhein-Energie Stadium will take place on May 18th.
