1,500 climate activists arrested in The Hague

For the seventh time, the group Extinction Rebellion blocked a city highway in the center of The Hague. The police evict the climate activists with water cannons and arrested more than 1,500 of them, including a “Game of Thrones” actress.
The Dutch police arrested more than 1,500 people at a demonstration by climate activists from the group Extinction Rebellion in The Hague. For the seventh time, they had blocked a section of a motorway in the city center to protest against Dutch subsidies for fossil fuels. The police said in the evening that they had used water cannons to evict the activists and arrested a total of 1,579 people.

40 of them would be prosecuted, among other things, for property damage and insult, the statement said. Accordingly, one of the activists had bitten a police officer during the arrest.
Several Dutch celebrities were also among the demonstrators, including actress Carice van Houten, best known for her role as priestess Melisandre in the series Game of Thrones. The Dutch news agency ANP reported that she had been arrested but was allowed to return home in the evening.
