PARIS (Agefi-Dow Jones)–Alstom announced Tuesday that it has been selected to supply electric locomotives and various equipment as part of the project to extend and modernize the rail network in the Greater Toronto area in Canada.

The French group received this order within the ONxpress Transportation Partners consortium, which also includes Aecon Group, Deutsche Bahn International Operations and FCC Construcción. The overall value of the project amounts to “several billion dollars”, according to a press release published on Tuesday, which does not specify the share going to Alstom.

The scope of work and the corresponding contract value will be fixed later, said the group, which plans to recruit several hundred people locally for this project.

In addition to the locomotives, Alstom has been commissioned to supply train control systems, a new traction power system and will provide network electrification via a catenary system. “Alstom will also upgrade existing double-deck rolling stock, signaling systems, telecommunications systems and other digital equipment, and maintain the new locomotives and signaling system for a period of 25 years,” adds the press release.
