Alternatives score – pure winter fun away from the ski slopes

Top booked: Lower Austria scores with alternative offers for winter holidays even if there is a lack of white splendor.

The lack of snow caused a gloomy mood in many places, especially in the ski areas. In Lower Austria, the lack of white splendor did not detract from the winter fun. Because the Christmas holidays were a complete success for the local tourism companies. In addition to the usual winter sports such as skiing and cross-country skiing, holidaymakers were enthusiastic about winter hikes, wellness, wine and cuisine as well as culture – such as cabarets and New Year’s concerts: “The hosts made the best of this situation and reacted with a lot of flexibility. Everything was possible during these holidays in Lower Austria: going for walks and skiing, summer tobogganing and ice skating,” stresses Tourism Provincial Councilor Jochen Danninger. “Due to the weather conditions, many ski areas have put together alternative offers,” says Michael Showerer, Managing Director of Lower Austria Advertising. For example, pedestrian operations were temporarily carried out at the Östscher lifts in Lackenhof, the Gemeindealpe Mitterbach, in the Annaberg ski area and at the Hochkar mountain railways. In the Wexl Arena in St. Corona am Wechsel, the motor skills park and the summer toboggan run were in operation. Accommodation very well booked People are consistently satisfied with the booking situation: for example, the accommodation in the Weinviertel was fully booked around the turn of the year due to special New Year’s Eve packages. In the Mostviertel and in the Vienna Alps, too, families and couples with stays of several days in the ski areas made sure that the accommodation was full. At the end of the year, many guests found their way to the Waldviertel. In general, the trend is towards short-term bookings. In addition, pricing is playing an increasingly important role.
