Although electric, the latest Hummer remains an aberration

Available in pickup and SUV bodies, the Hummer EV is GMC’s attempt to decarbonize an iconic model for lovers of big cars. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just unveiled the consumption rating and its measures concerning the latest behemoth of the American brand. Logically, with power and non-standard measurements, the score of 53 MPGe (arbitrary unit) is catastrophic.

Beyond the MPGe score, the EPA reveals its fuel consumption figures, which are closer to reality than the often optimistic WLTP cycle. Unsurprisingly, with three engines developing more than 1000 horsepower, 5.50 m in length and more than 4 tons on the scale, the Hummer EV Pick-up does not work miracles and must comply with the laws of physics.

Thus, this behemoth displays a consumption of 39.5 kWh / 100 km, which represents the consumption of two Tesla Model Y, which is not quite a featherweight. On the highway, consumption increases logically, burdened by approximate aerodynamics, and stands at 43.6 kWh/100 km. Worse, with off-road tires, consumption increases to 41.9 kWh/100 km and 46.5 kWh/100 km on the highway.

For those worried, the autonomy remains satisfactory thanks to an oversized battery of around 215 kWh of capacity and auguring stages of around 500 km before stopping at a charging station, preferably fast.

An aberration on all counts

Initially intended for the American army, the 4×4 Hummer is not really aimed at individuals, despite some success with celebrities and other wealthy personalities. Needless to say, the large-scale production of electric vehicles of this caliber would be an ecological disaster, both because of the emissions generated during manufacture and their hallucinating consumption, which hardly fits in a context where many concerns weigh on electricity supply and resource availability.

If it is able to shoot down the 0 to 100 km / h in almost 3 seconds, a feat for such a machine, we must not forget that there are other cars no less exciting but surely more virtuous. In addition, to drive this behemoth on our roads, you must first have passed the heavy goods vehicle license…
