“Always in our history”: Eriksen’s sad step for the comeback

Eriksen’s sad step for the comeback

Christian Eriksen has to end a chapter to be able to continue the history of his career: The Danish international, who fought for his life at the European Football Championship in the summer, is terminating his contract in Italy. This increases the chance of continuing his career.

Inter Milan and the Danish footballer Christian Eriksen have agreed to terminate their contract. After his collapse and cardiac arrest at the EM in the summer, the national player had a defibrillator used – according to the regulations in Italy, he is therefore no longer allowed to play professional sports there. The Dane has been under contract with the Lombard club since January 2020, which had paid him a 27 million euro transfer fee. Eriksen made 60 appearances for Inter and scored eight goals.

The champion and his midfielder have now agreed to end their contract. The club wished the 29-year-old all the best for the future. “Even if Inter and Christian go their separate ways today, we know that our bond will be strong and inseparable, forever. The most beautiful moments, the goals and victories, the hugs with the fans in front of the San Siro at the championship celebrations: All of that will stay in black and blue history forever, “wrote Inter.

Rumors of returning to Amsterdam

It was already clear at the end of October that Inter and Eriksen would part ways. “Although the current condition of the player does not meet the requirements for being fit for sport in Italy, the same could instead be achieved in other countries where the player could resume sporting activity,” said Inter in their statement. The club announced that they would let the Dane go at any time if Eriksen can continue playing football elsewhere. Eriksen himself had reported back to Inter Milan in August, “in excellent physical and mental condition,” as the Italians announced at the time. However, Eriksen will not be granted an exemption.

Eriksen suddenly collapsed on the pitch on June 12th during the European Championship match between Denmark and Finland in Copenhagen. He suffered cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. He was later used a defibrillator. As a result of this measure, he no longer receives medical approval as a professional footballer in Italy. By terminating the contract, Eriksen can now look for a new club.

The rumor persists that the Dane could now continue his career at Ajax Amsterdam. There, Daley Blind, is playing a player who was also used a defibrillator in 2019 after a postponed heart muscle inflammation. Since his return in February 2020, Blind has been one of the top performers of the Dutch again in Amsterdam. At the EM 2021 he was also on the national team. Eriksen started his professional career in Amsterdam, playing for the pros from 2010 to 2013 before moving to Tottenham Hotspur.
