The popularity of podcasts has increased significantly due to the corona pandemic. Here is a selection of apps for fans of the format.

Whether true crime, football, gaming or comedy: Podcasts on every imaginable topic are more popular today than ever before. And that’s probably also due to the corona pandemic, since the beginning of which many people have also become fans of the format. In the summer of 2020, a survey on behalf of the industry association Bitkom showed that every third consumer (33 percent) at least rarely listens to a podcast. In the previous year it was 26 percent.

According to data from the music streaming service Deezer, which also has podcasts, most podcasts are heard in Germany in an international comparison. Almost 70 percent of the users who also consume podcasts there listen for at least 30 minutes a week. With this value, Germany is at the top of a total of 180 markets worldwide. On average, consumers in Germany even listen to 140 minutes of podcast material, in France, for example, it is only 88 minutes. Here is an overview of useful apps for fans.

The big ones

Apple’s classic iPod coined the term “podcast”, under which the whole thing in the form of audio but also video content first became known to a wider audience in the mid-2000s. No wonder, then, that listeners come across millions of episodes of different podcasts, among other things “Apple Podcasts” and “Google Podcasts”, the corresponding apps from the tech giants.

Exclusive podcasts

Most podcasts are available on several popular platforms, but some of the different services also offer originals and exclusive podcasts. For example, in addition to the streaming platforms Spotify and Deezer also the provider who actually specializes in audio books and radio plays Audible In-house podcasts have been part of the program for some time. Other German-language exclusive podcasts are available from, among others Audio Now.

These originals and exclusive titles include podcasts such as “Mixed Hack” by Felix Lobrecht (32) and Tommi Schmitt (32) as well as “Fest & Flausching” by Jan Böhmermann (40) and Olli Schulz (47) on Spotify, “Die Pochers here!” by Oliver Pocher (43) and his wife Amira (28) from Audio Now and “Gang Stories – mit Kontra K”, the successful German rapper, at Deezer.

The all-rounder

There are also two popular pod catchers with a wide range of functions “Pocket Casts” and “Overcast”. For example, both apps have features that can automatically cut out pauses in speaking from podcasts. Listeners can also change the playback speed of content or give voices a special boost, among other things.
