Amazon backs off threat to ban UK Visa credit cards

LONDON, Jan 17 (Reuters) – Amazon announced on Monday that it intends to suspend its decision to ban the use of credit cards issued by Visa in the United Kingdom on its platform from January 19.

The e-commerce giant says discussions are underway to settle the dispute over transaction fees between the two groups.

“The planned change to the use of Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk will no longer take place on January 19,” Amazon wrote in an email to its customers.

“We are working closely with Visa on a possible solution that will allow customers to continue using their Visa credit cards on Amazon.co.uk.”

Amazon announced in November 2021 that it would stop accepting Visa-issued credit cards in the UK from January 19, 2022 due to perceived high transaction fees.

Amazon’s decision related only to credit cards from Visa, with debit cards from the world’s largest payments company still eligible on the e-commerce platform. (Report Michael Holden and Paul Sandle; French version Claude Chendjou, edited by Blandine Hénault)
