(Reuters) – Amazon.com said on Friday it would cut several hundred jobs at its Alexa division, which runs its voice assistant tool, citing changing business priorities and a focus on artificial intelligence (AI) generative.

“We are shifting some of our efforts to better align with our business priorities and what we know is most important to customers, including maximizing our resources and efforts focused on generative AI,” said Daniel Rausch, vice president of Alexa and Fire TV in an email.

“These changes lead us to abandon certain initiatives,” he adds.

A spokeswoman declined to say exactly how many jobs would be cut.

Over the past year, Amazon has cut more than 27,000 jobs as part of a major wave of layoffs that has affected the entire technology sector in the United States.
