Amazon fraud: consumer advocates warn customers of a new scam

The Lower Saxony consumer center warns Amazon customers of a new scam. Phishing e-mails are about alleged problems with payment processing via Amazon. Under no circumstances should customers respond to the scammers’ request for a direct transfer.

Anyone who buys from Amazon pays the bill directly from Amazon – regardless of whether Amazon is actually the seller. But that doesn’t stop scammers trying to trick the system. Now the Lower Saxony consumer advice center is reporting on a new scam that it specifically aimed at German Amazon customers Has.

The scammers send emails to customers telling them of alleged problems with payment processing to report. The problems would become so noticeable that Amazon did not receive the requested sum. As a simple “solution”, the fraudsters suggest simply bypassing Amazon’s payment system (source: Verbraucherzentrale Niedersachsen).

It is easier for customers if they simply pay the bill directly to the merchant’s account would. In this specific case, they state that it would be an account in Spain. The consumer center strongly advises against transferring the money.
