Amazon Games: John Smedley leaves the studio after 6 years and no games released

John Smedley is a big name in video games, he co-founded Verant Interactivewhich subsequently gave rise to Sony Online Entertainment following the merger of several studios. The firm is now called Daybreak Game Companyand John Smedley’s name is strongly linked to EverQuesta MMORPGs very popular in the 2000s.

But in 2015, Smedley left Daybreak Game Companybefore joining Amazon Games two years laterwhen the online distribution giant was still starting out in the world of video games. Amazon had then recruited big names like Kim Swift, Clint Hocking and therefore John Smedley, but all these beautiful people have since left the ship. Yes, even Smedley, who announced his departure fromAmazon Games through an e-mail obtained by Bloombergin which he says he wants to try “something new”.

During these six years spent at Amazon GamesJohn Smedley would have… done nothing. At least publicly. No game has been launched with his name in the credits, it must be said thatAmazon Games chained the setbacks between the canceled games like the MMO The Lord of the Rings or those abandoned shortly after launch, such as Crucible. Of course, Smedley didn’t spend six years twiddling his thumbs, Amazon also declares thathe will stay with the company for a while for a transition periodproof that its role is important internally.

As a reminder, Amazon Games still has some successsuch as the development of New Worldat €39.99 on Amazon obviouslyor the Western edition of Lost Arkof them MMORPGs who have managed to seduce fans of the genre. The studio will now publish the next tomb Raider of Crystal Dynamicshis first solo game.
