Amazon has the reputation of having remained discreet for two years on artificial intelligence (AI), while its competitors Microsoft and Google have occupied all the media space with ChatGPT and other Bards. However, Jeff Bezos’ firm continues its journey in this vast virtual universe.
The New York Times learned on November 28, 2023 that Amazon was launching Amazon Q, its virtual assistant in chatbot form, exclusively reserved for its internal employees. His duties include “ summarize strategic documents, complete internal reports or answer questions about company policy. »
This decision ensures that the multinational company avoids the pitfalls faced by its competitors, such as OpenAI which opened its ChatGPT to the public with great fanfare last year. Amazon Q is based on Bedrock, but what is it?
The other big difference is that Amazon Q is not a single AI model like GPT: it uses Bedrock, a sort of toolbox that combines several technologies (Claude from Anthropic, Jurrassic-2, Stable Diffusion, or even Titan which summarizes texts). The ultimate objective is to offer this toolbox to other companies, who would personalize it as they wish.
Amazon is not that timid in AI, but it is banking on different foals. The company has launched a very heavy investment plan (up to $4 billion at the end) in Anthropic, the company that develops Claude, a direct competitor to ChatGPT.
The NYT reports that safeguards have been put in place so that Amazon Q cannot accidentally reveal confidential data to certain unauthorized people.
Here, the letter Q means “questions”, but is also a reference to James Bond’s “Geo Trouvetou” – not to be confused with Q*, the supposedly mysterious AI that OpenAI boss Sam Altman is said to have started to develop secretly.
