  • Almost unknown in Germany, a sensation in the USA: “Sound of Freedom”.
  • The action drama about human trafficking is recommended primarily by conspiracy theorists, including lead actor Jim Caviezel.
  • Now Amazon Prime Video paid a large sum to be able to show the film on stream.

“Barbie” may be the most successful film of 2023, but “Sound of Freedom” earned the title as the biggest surprise success. The drama about human trafficking in Colombia is an independent production that achieved a budget of $14.2 million through crowdfunding, among other things.

The film has now grossed over 430 million US dollars and in the USA has even surpassed significantly more expensive films such as “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part 1” and “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny”. After such a hit, numerous streaming services licked their fingers, but it is not the quality of “Sound of Freedom” that made the film such a hit.

“Real patriots see this film!”

The Christian film studio Angel Studios didn’t have the financial resources for a massive advertising campaign, but ultimately “Sound of Freedom” became a ubiquitous topic in the USA even without much advertising. The reason: Republicans and conspiracy theorists discovered the film and made it their mission to recommend the action drama.

Numerous videos circulated on TikTok claiming that Democrats wanted to block audiences from seeing the film so that no one would know the truth about child trafficking. Cinema chains are also said to have intentionally disrupted screenings by turning off air conditioning or leaving the lights on during performances.

Even Donald Trump agreed with this tenor, in his opinion every true patriot should see “Sound of Freedom”. So the film became a sure-fire success, with director Alejandro Monteverde describing it as “heartbreaking” in an interview with Variety that his film is now always associated with lateral thinkers in the media.

In Hollywood, of course, the most important thing is that a film is seen – regardless of who the audience is. Several streaming services therefore tried to get the rights to “Sound of Freedom”, which is now available digitally in the USA and opened in cinemas in Germany on November 8th.

Ultimately, Amazon Prime Video won the race here. The streaming service paid an eight-figure sum – the exact price was not published – in order to be able to offer “Sound of Freedom” from December 26, 2023.

It is not yet known whether Amazon has also acquired the international rights or just the US rights, but the film will not appear on the stream here in December either way. Currently you should use your Prime Video subscription to stream the best series of the year anyway!
